Support in Halls
For some, your time at university will be your first time away from home or in a busy city such as London or even your first time in the UK! This, combined with the change of learning style of university work, can be very daunting for some. Living in London can also apply a financial stress on your academic life. However, you are not alone in tackling these challenges. In halls a combination of Hall Seniors, Wardens, Subwardens and events are all here to help with your university life. The College has a vast range of support services available to help you. We will go through some of them on this page. If you are ever unsure, you should visit the College’s Support Zone site for lots more current information.
The wardens maintain an out-of-hours support system called the duty warden. A member of the wardening team will be on duty every week night from 1800h until 0800h the following morning, and 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday. They can be contacted on the duty mobile at 07590 250 564
The Wardens consist of the wardens who is a member of staff at Imperial and the subwardens who are PhD students who already have the benefit of completing degrees (often but not always at Imperial College). We are here to help with a number of roles in the hall. We help organise events alongside the senior team but they are also here for various welfare and pastoral support roles, as well as ensuring that the hall rules are adhered to. They can offer someone to talk to confidentially about university issues or problems within the hall, such as difficulty with roommates, to make sure you have the best possible year. If a Warden feels they can not help personally, they will also endeavour to connect you to the right people if you need to discuss an issue in more depth. From time to time Wardens will also deal with disciplinary issues within the hall. But we really would rather spend our time supporting students.
Hall seniors are returning students just like you. They have had the benefit of one or more years of experience of living in halls, and have chosen to stay on in halls to be a friendly face for all within the hall. They are the person to go to on your floor if you need local information or want to chat about your course. They are also very good with casual advice (e.g. about whether some clubbing night is any good) and they also organise events for you throughout the year.
The Student Hub provides the support and answers you need throughout your Imperial journey. Their experienced team can advise you on a range of essential services from admission and accommodation to student financial support and student records. You can access the Student Hub:
You can also request official documents, such as proof of your student status and all necessary letters required to open bank accounts or get references for renting privately etc., through ASK us online service.
ICT Helpdesk and Services
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provides all the central IT systems across the College. The ICT Service Desk is located in the main Library should you have an ICT query. To get started please see the following page for ICT resources for new students.
The emergency contacts for all campus can be found on this page.
In addition, the College has developed the Safe Zone app. If you or someone else ever need assistance in an emergency, simply tap the alert button in the app and the Security Control Room will be immediately notified and your location will be shared with them. The Security team can respond immediately to your specific needs. Once an alert is opened, you can also either call or direct message a Security guard. If possible and safe to do so, you can provide further details on what you need and how they can best help. The app can be download from the App Store or Google Play store.
